In November 1996, Honda launched their S-MX under their original concept "Creative Mover". "S" stands for Street, "M" for Mover and "X" adds a mystical appeal. The body with less than 4m in overall length is not as bulky as bulky as other full-sized box-type wagons, but it has enough room for four persons and their baggage with comfort. The large-sized headlights and narrow grille give the S-MX a distinctive front profile. The compact 2 liter DOCH engine is mounted tranversely in the front and is tuned for better response especially in town. The interior is the highlight of this vehicle. It is designed like a spacious living room, with the adjustable bench-type front and rear seats for the passengers comfort. The S-MX is offered in 3 grades, normal 2WD, 4WD and the Lowdown 2WD sporty version. As the name reveals itself, the overall height of the Lowdown is loewered by 15mm from normal versions, and front/rear spoiler bumper and side skirts are equipped to the Lowdown for added appeal. Beautifully sculpted 3-spoke wheels are exclusively equipped to the Lowdown for added appeal. Although the engine itself remains unchanged from the normal versions, many additional tunings such as exclusive muffler, lowered final gear ratio or hardened suspension have been made to achieve sporty specifications. The S-MX Lowdown offers the public a totally new concept in motor vehicle design and purpose that is aimed for the younger generations of road-uses in Japan.
